Fishing In Sarasota
Since Sarasota is situated right on the Gulf of Mexico and surrounded by bay waters and dotted with many lakes, it is a fisherman's dream. Fishing is indeed a very popular recreational activity in the area. It can be as simple as shore fishing or as involved as a three day deep sea fishing trip.
Bay fishing enthusiasts can wade out into the shallow waters and cast their lines for snook, trout, and pompano. For those that don't care to wade out into the waters, there are numerous piers in Sarasota where one can walk out into the bay or gulf and drop a line in deep water. You can also fish from the beach into the Gulf waters at Siesta Key.
Many who vacation in Sarasota are sure to include a deep sea fishing expedition. These can be as short as 4 hours in length or up to three days. During the months of May to August, deep sea fishers catch king mackerel, cobia, tuna, and barracuda. August through October brings catches of sharks and snappers. Most deep sea fishing trips no matter the length are all inclusive. That is, the equipment, bait and license are part of the package.
If you are new to fishing in Sarasota and don't know where to start, you will be happy to know there are several fishing guides available who can take you to where the good fishing holes are. You will also find that it is easy to rent a boat at any one of the many marinas around the area so you can explore the waters on your own.
Here are a couple of popular fishing spots in Sarasota:
Island Park
This is located downtown on the bay. You can fish right off of the seawall which surrounds this beautiful park.
Tony Saprito Pier
This is a good place to fish because it is right next to a bait shop and plenty of parking is available. It is off the John Ringling Causeway and you can fish from the seawall or a pier.
Upon arriving in Sarasota, just stop in one of the many bait shops you will see and the friendly locals will answer any questions you might have about fishing the local waters. They will also be able to hook you up with local fishing guides and deep sea excursions. Be aware that in most cases you will be required by law to purchase fishing license no matter if you are fishing in salt water or fresh water. You can purchase a license at most bait shops and other stores that sell fishing supplies and bait in Sarasota. You can buy a three day or one week license if you are on vacation and don't want to buy a yearly license as the residents are required to.
